Despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the College Prep BEAT THE HEAT workshop has come back in 2021 with a new cohort of students. The program is targeted to help low-income high school students get exposed to university environments and to educate and inspire students to get a higher education after high school. These students were introduced to many activities on campus from career orientation to lab visits, allowing them to explore more about what they like and prepare them the best for their future path
At this workshop with NEIT Lab, under the instruction of our MS and Ph.D. students, Quan Harry Chau and Kidus Guye, students learned about the basics of heat transfer, surface science, and the applications of heat transfer in the semiconductor industry. Students had a chance to conduct hands-on experiments to understand concepts such as conduction, convection, and the technologies used for cooling electronics. The workshop lasted 4 weeks with more than 20 students involved. More than 80% of students really enjoyed what
